WELCOME TO BOSTON!
The 2013 History of Science Society meeting will be held on November 21-24, 2013 at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. The meeting will mark the 100th anniversary of the publication of the journal Isis.
Online meeting registration is now closed. Registration rates are the same as last year – there has been no increase. You can pay online with Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. Please contact the HSS Executive Office (email@example.com) if you would prefer to pay by check.
Early bird discounted rates are in effect through 31 August. Regular registration rates will be available from 1 September through 11 November. Registration after 11 November will need to be done at the meeting hotel, with the higher onsite registration rates.

In appreciation for generous support of the 2013 Meeting from MIT and Harvard, attendees who are faculty or students at either institution are eligible for a 50% discount on online registration rates. You may be asked to verify your affiliation.
Please see the list of extras that you can include with your registration below. Please note that these meeting extras can only be guaranteed for online registrants. On-site and one-day registrants may not be able to purchase any of these, including tickets to the Saturday reception at the MIT Museum.
Once you have registered for the meeting, please check to confirm that the email address associated with your registration account is correct. You can click here to check and update any information as needed. We will be sending updates and information to your registration email.
Requests for refunds will be honored if received by November 7th. Requests made after this date will be decided on a case-by-case basis. If you register but are unable to attend the meeting, you can request a letter acknowledging your registration costs as a donation.

Rooms for the Meeting are $169/night for single- and double-occupancy plus tax (roughly $194/night total).
The deadline for booking rooms at the conference rate has passed.
There will be a block of rooms reserved for graduate students at a reduced rate of $135/night plus taxes. All graduate student rooms will be booked through the HSS Executive Office, NOT the hotel. At this point, the graduate student room block is full. To add your name to the waiting list for a graduate student room, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.

In addition to the regular meeting activities, there are several other events and extras that you can include with your registration. These include:
- A ticket for the Saturday evening reception at the MIT Museum. The $5.00 will help offset the cost of transportation. See below for more.
- Extra tickets for the Saturday evening reception – for those not registered for the HSS Meeting. These are $15.00 each.
- The Women’s Caucus Breakfast – $10.00 per ticket
- ISIS 100th anniversary coffee mugs. $8.00 for each of these stylish java vessels.

• On Saturday evening, the MIT Museum will host a special reception. With generous support from MIT and Harvard we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Isis. Come for cake, food, and a hosted bar (beer and wine) as we ring in the second century for Isis. Regular meeting registrants can buy a ticket for $5. Please note that tickets will be extremely limited (and more expensive) for on-site registrants.
• Please review the preliminary program to see the numerous workshops, roundtables, and distinguished lectures taking place during the meeting, especially in the lunch and evening hours.
• Following up on the success of the Blue Marble event at the 2012 Meeting in San Diego, the HSS will be sponsoring another public engagement event, Science in the Streets, on Thursday afternoon, 3:00 – 6:00, with the plenary session following at 6:15.
• This year’s plenary session, “New Forms for Old Things: Experiments in Scientific Story-Telling,” promises to be engaging and illuminating, with presentations from Ken Alder (Northwestern University), Carla Nappi (University of British Columbia), and Pamela Smith (Columbia University).
• The meeting will also feature the largest poster session we’ve had at an HSS meeting, an opening reception, interest group meetings and lectures, and more. We will highlight these here and in regular emails as the meeting approaches.
If you would prefer to use a travel agent instead of making your own travel arrangements, we suggest using Gladieux Travel. The website can be found here; they charge a flat $25 fee per booking.
Boston is served by Logan International Airport (BOS).
To get to the meeting hotel, attendees can take a cab (~$15.00), or use the MBTA Silver Line bus, which picks up just outside the baggage claim area and will drop meeting participants at the World Trade Center stop. From there, go up the steps to the pedestrian walk. It is a 5-10 minute walk across the pedestrian bridge to the hotel, which is next to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. As of this writing, the Silver Line is free from the airport to the World Trade Center stop.
Boston has several train stations, the most convenient of which is the South Station. The South Station is a hub for city buses and trains as well as Amtrak. It is about a 15-minute walk from the meeting hotel.
Boston can be reached via Interstates 90, 93, or 95.
Travel in Boston
The MBTA provides bus and subway lines in Boston. The nearest stop to the meeting hotel is the World Trade Center (Silver Line). The South Station is a major transpotation hub and is a 15-minute walk from the hotel.
Information on fares for the MBTA can be found here. There are options for single-ride tickets; daily or weekly passes; and CharlieCards, which can store money for fares and offer a discounted fare compared to single-ride tickets. CharlieCards and tickets can be purchased in subway stations at a fare vending machine. Please note that the Silver Line from Logan Airport to the World Trade Center is free.
Wheelchair Accessible Transportation Services
All taxicab drivers are required to accept any passenger who has a disability, including their service animal. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available upon request at no additional charge.
All Boston taxi cabs with fifteen (15) or more cabs are required to have accessible vehicles 24 hours a day. There are 78 accessible cabs in Boston.

Notes on Tipping

All meeting participants must register for the meeting. Although you need not be a member of the HSS to participate in the meeting, membership will provide you a significant discount on registration fees. Click here for information on registration.
All meeting rooms will be equipped with an LCD projector (beamer), screen, podium, and microphone/speakers. If you require any additional audio-visual equipment, or an internet connection for your presentation, please contact the HSS Executive Office (email@example.com) as soon as possible. Please be aware that you may be responsible for additional costs incurred.
The book exhibit will be hosted at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. The publisher’s brochure, which includes information regarding book exhibits, packet inserts and advertising, as well as some special amenities for exhibitors, can be downloaded here.

Childcare: The options for childcare recommended by the meeting hotel are:
Nursing Room: A nursing/breastpumping room will be set up in Room Elm 2, on the Concourse Level, for Friday through Sunday. Details, including hours, are are in the preliminary program.
The History of Science Society will offer five grants of up to two hundred dollars to assist delegates who require additional dependent care during the meeting. Applications must be submitted by 30 September and can be completed online at this link.
- Please note that:
– Only one caretaker per family may apply for a grant.
– Graduate students, independent scholars, and early careerists are eligible, with priority given to those who appear on the program.
– The funds available may not meet all of the needs of applicants.
- Eligible expenses:
– Caretakers, either onsite or for extra expenses for additional care required at home.
– Airfare/hotel for a caregiver to accompany the dependent to the meeting site.
- Ineligible expenses:
– Meals, onsite transportation, or other entertainment costs.
– Normal dependent care expenses unrelated to and unaffected by meeting attendance.
– Normal expenses incurred by the attendee for participation in the meeting (e.g., flight, hotel, meals, registration).
– Travel costs for the dependent.
The History of Science Society is accepting donations to help support the Dependent Care Grants. Donations can be made as part of meeting registration, or at this link.
As in past years, the History of Science Society has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to help fund travel to meeting participants who are graduate students, independent scholars or recent PhDs. These grants can be used for travel to and from the meeting as well as registration costs. Please note that only U.S. citizens and individuals from U.S. institutions are eligible. Preference is given to graduate students and independent scholars and to those who are members of the HSS.
The reimbursement form for travel grants can be downloaded here. Please be sure to read the directions (p. 2 of the pdf) carefully. The form, along with all receipts, is due in the HSS Executive Office no later than 23 December 2013. Please note that all materials must be received in the office by the 23rd, not postmarked.
