WELCOME TO THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE!

The 2012 3-Society Meeting will bring together the History of Science Society, the British Society for History of Science, and the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

The Societies

Three societies will be participating at the quadrennial meeting:

The History of Science Society (HSS), which is the world’s largest society dedicated to understanding science, technology, medicine, and their interactions with society in historical context.

The British Society for the History of Science (BSHS), he main organization in the British Isles working to bring together people with an interest in the histories of science, technology and medicine and their changing relationship with society.

The Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science (CSHPS), a Canadian forum bringing together historians, philosophers, sociologists, and a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars interested in exploring all aspects of science, past and present.

Meeting Registration

The registration desk will be located in Houston Hall on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. If you cannot make it to the registration desk before the keynote address at 5:00 on Wednesday, 11 July, you are encouraged to go to the address and reception and stop at the registration desk on Thursday morning. Please keep in mind that you will need your registration badge for breakfast.

The registration desk will be open 2:00 – 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 11 July and 8:00 am – 5:30 pm Thursday through Saturday.

If you do not have an account, you will be able to create one. If you have any problems with the on-line registration system, please contact info@hssonline.org.

On-line registration is available through midnight EDT, 29 June 2012. After that, all registrations must be complete on-site.

Registration includes admission to all of the sessions as well as full breakfast Thursday, Friday, and Saturday mornings.

For those interested in a one-day registration, that will be available on-site only. One-day registrations will cost $60.00 for members of one of the three societies and $80.00 for non-members. Breakfast is not included with one-day registrations.

Museum Tours

A special guided tour of the Academy of Natural Science of Drexel University is available for meeting attendees. The tour will take place on Thursday morning, 10:00 – 12:00; tickets cost $15.00 and can be purchased at the time of registration. If you have already registered for the meeting and would like to participate in the tour of the Academy, please email info@hssonline.org. Thank you to all who signed up for the tours of the Mütter and Wagner museums. Unfortunately, the tours are currently full. If you were unable to sign up for a tour, the museums are also open for walk-in visitors. Please see the individual meeting websites for more information.

A video of the plenary session, “The State of the Profession,” can be viewed online. The session included panelists Bernie Lightman (York Univ.), Aileen Fyfe (Univ. of St. Andrews), Peter Dear (Cornell Univ.), and Gordon McOuat (Univ. of King’s College, Halifax) as well as a great deal of audience discussion. Meeting Location

The sessions of the 2012 3-Society Meeting will be held in Houston Hall on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

Meeting Lodging

Dorm Rooms: Meeting attendees will be have the option of booking dorm rooms in Harnwell College House at the University of Pennsylvania at a very affordable rate. The rooms can be booked for $75 per night plus taxes (3-night minimum stay).

Dorm accommodations are a short walk from Houston Hall, where the sessions will be held. For those wishing to book a dorm room, please note the following:

  • These are air conditioned multi-occupancy suites (2, 3, or 4 bedrooms) with a shared living space and a full bath (please note that the bedroom doors do not lock)
  • Rooms consist of a pre-made bed, towels, and washcloth
  • A complimentary kit of shampoo, soap, etc. is provided to each guest
  • No meals are included in the rate (your registration will include breakfast on Thurs, Fri, and Sat)
  • Complimentary University of Pennsylvania Guest ID cards provide guests with internet access throughout campus
  • Free washing machines and dryers are on each floor (BYOD – bring your own detergent)
  • Access to the computer lab in the residence hall
  • No one under 12 is allowed in the dorms
  • You may request roommates. Please make sure that your requested roommate includes your name on her own reservation.

Hotel: Although the deadline for reserving a room at the Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel at the special conference rate has passed, a member has informed us that some rooms may be reserved at a special, prepaid, non-refundable rate that is well below the norm for Philadelphia. As of June 19th, this rate was just over $130/night before tax. This is provided for your information only – we cannot guarantee room availability or rate. You can reserve online via the hotel’s website here. The Sheraton is just a few minutes walk from the meeting site on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Traveling to Philadelphia

If you are traveling from outside of the United States, please be sure to have all necessary visas for travel to Philadelphia. More information can be found on the U.S. State Department travel site.

Planes

Philadelphia is served by the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), roughly twenty minutes from the University of Pennsylvania.

From the airport, you can take a cab to the Penn campus, or take the train to the University City stop, which is about a 5-minute walk from the University.

For those flying from the UK, it has been suggested that a cheaper alternative to flying into Philadelphia is to fly into Newark, NJ (code EWR) and then take the Amtrak train to Philadelphia. The train departs from the Newark airport and takes just over an hour to get to Philadelphia.

Trains

The 30th Street Station is served by Amtrak for intercity travel as well as SEPTA for local rail service. the 30th Street Station is about a 15 minute walk from the University of Pennsylvania.

Automobiles

Philadelphia can be reached via Interstates 76 or 95.

Travel Grants

Limited travel grants are available to support travel to and from the meeting. Applicants must participate in the meeting (e.g., deliver a paper, chair or comment on a session) and preference will be given to graduate students and independent scholars. Recent PhDs are also eligible.

This travel grant program is for the HSS and CSHPS; the BSHS is administering its own travel grant program.

If you are submitting a reimbursement form for your travel grant, please observe the due date of 20 August.

Publisher and Book Exhibitor Information

The book exhibit will be hosted at Houston Hall, site of the meeting sessions. The publisher’s brochure, which includes information on display tables, packet inserts, and advertising can be found here.
