The Program in Science, Technology, and Society at Colby College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position. We seek candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching in any area of Science, Technology, and Society. The teaching load for the 2021-2022 academic year will include four courses: Introduction to STS, the two-course Technology Matters and Senior Project (senior capstone) sequence for senior STS majors and minors, and one additional course in the successful candidate’s area of expertise.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by September 1, 2021 and a demonstrated record of research in any area of STS. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the social and ethical dimensions of medicine, artificial intelligence, management of natural resources, and big data. We are also interested in candidates who approach any of these topics with attention to how race, gender, disability, and other facets of perspective and diversity impact the production, transmission, and application of knowledge. Colby’s recent investments in artificial intelligence medical humanities, environmental humanities, data science, and computational biology provide significant collaborative opportunities for STS scholars working in or adjacent to any of these areas of inquiry. We are especially interested in candidates who, through their teaching and scholarship, will contribute to the diversity of the campus community. The successful candidate will have opportunities to work with the Center for the Arts and Humanities, Special Collections, the Colby College Museum of Art, and the new Davis Institute of Artificial Intelligence.

The Program in Science, Technology, and Society at Colby was founded in 1988 with a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to stimulate the “New Liberal Arts of Technology.” Today the program represents a microcosm of the liberal arts at Colby, counting among its majors and minors a diverse range of students with interests that cut across the disciplines, and requiring its students to take multiple courses in the natural sciences. In addition to the STS core courses, faculty across the College contribute cross-listed courses in STS, ensuring students approach STS topics from disciplinary standpoints across the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The Program routinely draws major scholars and practitioners as guest faculty and speakers.
