University of Tokyo, Center for Global Communication Strategies: Project Assistant Professor in Academic Writing

Job type: Faculty Non Tenured

Application deadline: May 18, 2017

The University of Tokyo is Japan’s premier university. We are currently looking for an adventurous, enthusiastic scholar with a commitment to high-quality education to join our international team in the ALESS and ALESA programs.

The ALESS (Active Learning of English for Science Students) and ALESA (Active Learning of English for Student of the Arts) programs provide compulsory English courses for science and humanities students, respectively. The programs include a semester-length academic writing course as well as a half-semester workshop designed to enhance fluency in academic discussion. In ALESS writing classes, students design and conduct a simple controlled experiment, which provides the basis for a scientific essay in the IMRaD style. In ALESA writing classes, students conduct research on an academic topic and write an analytical or argumentative essay using proper scholarly apparatus. The average class size is 15 students. In addition to these compulsory courses, ALESS and ALESA faculty occasionally teach content-based elective English courses in their areas of expertise. The curriculum of the ALESS and ALESA Programs is under constant refinement through collaboration among all faculty.

Starting date: 1 September 2017

Terms of contract: Until 31 March 2018, renewable for up to a maximum of five years’ employment, depending on budgetary constraints and evaluation of work performance.

Applicants for ALESA should have a PhD (or ABD with strong record of publication) in a subject field within the humanities or social sciences. Applicants for ALESS should have a PhD (or ABD with strong record of publication) in the natural or social sciences, medicine, or engineering. All applicants must possess a very high (native or near-native) level of English proficiency. Prior experience teaching academic writing, scientific writing, or English as a Foreign Language is an advantage.

Responsibilities

The appointee will teach seven 105-minute English classes each week. There are 13 weeks per semester and two semesters per year. The courses taught include the academic writing, spoken fluency, and occasional elective courses noted above. The appointee will also participate in curriculum development.
