San Francisco State University’s School of Humanities and Liberal Studies invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Humanities and Liberal Studies with expertise in Science, Technology and Culture beginning August 2017.

The School of Humanities and Liberal Studies houses several interdisciplinary programs including Humanities, Liberal Studies, American Studies, and California Studies. The School of Humanities and Liberal Studies is open to diverse pedagogies and research methodologies.

We seek a scholar-teacher who specializes in critical, historical, and cross-cultural studies of science and technology. The ideal candidate is familiar with a global range of historical and contemporary ideas and practices in science and technology. We are looking for applicants who bridge scientific and humanistic fields of inquiry, and demonstrate an ability to teach and design courses that are interdisciplinary and comparative or transnational in scope. Ability to incorporate digital humanities into pedagogy preferred but not required.

The candidate should be prepared to develop and teach introductory and advanced courses on topics in science, technology, and culture, and to help integrate science and technology issues into several more broadly defined courses in the School.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as Science and Technology Studies (STS), History, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, or a related field.

Candidates must have an active record of scholarship related to their area of specialization, and must be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching. We prefer candidates who have teaching and/or research experience with a large, diverse student body.

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in STS studies; mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students; writing and publishing in one’s area of specialty; and participating in committee and service assignments. Rank and salary: Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The CSU provides generous health, retirement, and other benefits.
