About the opportunity

The School of History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) is looking for a lecturer to expand our current research and teaching program. The applicant is expected to make substantial and sustained contributions to the School’s academic program through research, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, teaching, and outreach. We welcome applicants from candidates with expertise in any field related to the various sub-disciplines of HPS, but are particularly looking for someone who a) is able to address issues related to science and ethics, and/or science and social policy , broadly construed; and b) will have an excellent ability in engaging with scientists and scholars from other disciplines. Applications from scholars conducting research on non-western topics are encouraged.

The School of HPS is part of the Faculty of Science, and draws undergraduate and postgraduate students from both science and the humanities.  This appointment recognizes its continuous growth in student numbers, scholarly output and competitive funding, and the successful candidates will be expected to actively contribute to the expansion of the School’s international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

  • The ability to undertake original research either independently or as part of a team, and the potential and/or ability (potential to attract funding for research.

  • Proven skills in, or well-articulated ideas about, designing and delivering quality educational programs that support student needs and meet curriculum requirements
  • A strong commitment to interacting with students, staff and other members of the University community in a professional, collegial and respectful manner

This position is within the School of History and Philosophy of Science, which is part of the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

The School of History and Philosophy of Science consists of an outstanding group of researchers and has a strong record in attracting grant funding and in terms of publication output. As a discipline, it has received the highest grade – 5 – in the recent Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research in Australia (ERA) survey. The School of HPS is part of the Faculty of Science, and draws undergraduate and postgraduate students from both science and the humanities. It enjoys excellent relations with departments in the Arts faculty (in particular Philosophy and History), as well as with medicine, leading to innovative collaborations in research and teaching.
