The Faculty of Arts is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. The Faculty is steeped in history with its roots beginning over 125 years ago. Its Arts degree was the first degree offered at the University in 1876.
Today the Faculty is a place of innovative practice and thought leadership. With outstanding teachers who have won national learning and teaching awards, graduates have gone on to become leading politicians, policy makers, geographers, historians, philosophers, curators, teachers, musicians and writers. The faculty offers an interesting workplace of diverse disciplines clustered around the arts, humanities, education and social sciences.
The School of Humanities is one of four schools in the Faculty of Arts. The school spans ten broad disciplinary areas: Art History; Classics, Archaeology & Ancient History; English and Creative Writing; French Studies; German Studies; History; Linguistics; Media; Philosophy; Spanish Studies. With a strong research culture, the School offers an intellectually stimulating environment in which to work.
The Head of the School of Humanities is expected to make an effective contribution to the overall management of the Faculty and to lead and manage the School of Humanities.
The Head of School reports to the Executive Dean. The role is to be performed in such a manner as to promote the development of the identities, and academic and research strengths of the departments and areas within the School in accordance with the Faculty’s and University’s strategic plans.
The broad responsibilities of the Head, School of Humanities include:
- Strategic and operational planning
- Academic leadership
- Staff development and management
- Finance and infrastructure management.
Salary: Academic Level D $127,063 – $139,984 per annum, or Level E $163,674 per annum. A Head of School loading will also apply to this position.
Superannuation: An employer contribution of 17% applies.
Term of position: This 3 year fixed term position is available from 1 August 2015.
To be successful you should have:
- Demonstrated teaching and/or research excellence in a discipline in the School of Humanities;
- A capacity to provide effective academic and administrative leadership;
- An ability to communicate with a wide range of people;
- Strong interpersonal and representation skills;
- Effective academic/research planning and strategy formation skills;
- Effective budget planning and strategy formation skills;
- The ability to deliver the key accountabilities in the role statement;
- A capacity to play an effective role as part of the University and Faculty leadership and management team.
