The Governing Board of the Philosophy of Science Association invites applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Association’s journal, Philosophy of Science. The editorship will be assumed on July 1, 2017 and is normally held for a renewable term of five years.
In accordance with the Bylaws of the PSA, President Ken Waters is appointing a Search and Selection Committee that will produce a shortlist of candidates for consideration by the Governing Board of the PSA. The final selection is made by the Governing Board.
Founded in 1934, Philosophy of Science is currently published five times a year by the University of Chicago Press, with copyright retained by the Philosophy of Science Association. Every January, April, July, and October (the regular issues) the journal publishes articles, book reviews, discussion notes, and essay reviews; every December it publishes proceedings from the most recent Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association. The Editor-in-Chief of Philosophy of Science is responsible for selecting manuscripts for publication in the regular issues of Philosophy of Science, supervising the Philosophy of Science editorial office, and coordinating the production of the journal with UC Press for all issues. The Editor-in-Chief must hold a tenured academic appointment, have a distinguished research record in philosophy of science, and be capable of judicious and prompt interaction with contributors. Further, the Editor-in-Chief will be affiliated with an institution able to join the Philosophy of Science Association in providing material and financial support for the Philosophy of Science editorial office. Initial applications for the Editor-in-Chief of Philosophy of Science should summarize the applicant’s qualifications for the editorship and describe the likely institutional support, such as teaching release, office space, and graduate student assistance (formal commitments at this stage are not required). A 1-2 page document is requested, along with a copy of the applicant’s CV. Selected applicants will be contacted no later than January 31, 2016 with invitations to submit full proposals. These full proposals (along with institutional commitments) will be due by March 31, 2016. It is anticipated that the Governing Board of the PSA will announce the new Editor-in-Chief for Philosophy of Science by July 1, 2016.
