The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology invites applications for the position of Department Head and Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences. This is a tenured, pending SD Board of Regents approval, twelve-month position with a desired start date of June 22, 2017. The successful candidate will possess an earned Doctorate in a discipline within Humanities and Social Sciences, or a related field. The successful candidate will also have a balanced perspective on teaching and scholarly activity; the vision and leadership to lead faculty representing a diversified range of interests; demonstrated successful administrative and management skills; expertise with budget oversight; supervisory experience; effective communication skills, both written and oral; strong organizational skills; and the ability to initiate, implement, and collaborate on cross-disciplinary activities.
The Department Head supervises the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty and staff which include the disciplines of art, English, philosophy, music, history, psychology, political science, and sociology. The Department Head also coordinates the Bachelor of Science – Interdisciplinary Sciences and Associate of Arts – General Studies degree programs. The Department Head reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and will work with the Provost on the University’s six strategic foci: student success-prepare more undergraduate students for leadership in engineering and science; research-increase research to prepare science and engineering experts, advance knowledge, and catalyze economic development; facilities-redevelop and expand needed living, learning, and research spaces; people-recruit, develop, and retain excellent faculty and staff; administration-responsibly steward financial and physical resources; and development-establish a robust culture of philanthropy to enable the university to sustain excellence. Primary responsibilities of the department head are to provide visionary leadership; to encourage excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, and service; to recruit and advance the professional development of faculty, staff and students; to promote productive relationships with students, parents, alumni, and industry; to manage departmental funds; and demonstrate a commitment to the cultivation of an ethnically and culturally diverse learning community.
