The Program in the History of Science and Technology at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the history of technology, specializing in computing and information sciences. This includes but is not limited to data analytics, informatics, communications, software studies, algorithmic regulation, and computing and information sciences as they relate more broadly to political economy, culture, government, law, and engineering. We seek applicants who can move across disciplinary boundaries and engage in collaborative work. The appointment is expected to be at the rank of assistant professor, although exceptional candidates at all ranks will be considered.
An earned doctorate is required at the time the appointment begins.
About the Job
Candidates will be expected to initiate and maintain a vibrant research program. Teaching responsibilities will include further development of a large-enrollment undergraduate course currently titled “The Digital World”, potential new and existing undergraduate and graduate courses, and graduate advising. University faculty members are also expected to participate in faculty governance and serve on university committees, as appropriate to rank and interests.
About the Department
The Program in the History of Science and Technology (HST) at the University of Minnesota is affiliated with the Program in the History of Medicine in the Academic Health Center, together forming the Graduate Program in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (HSTM). We also house the Charles Babbage Institute for the History of Information Technology (CBI). The HST program is located in the College of Science and Engineering and has strong connections with the Academic Health Center, the College of Biological Sciences, and the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science. Each faculty member’s tenure line is in a science, engineering or clinical department. This unique structure affords outstanding opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
