The Philosophy Department in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (without tenure) for an appointment beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. We seek candidates who specialize in Medical Ethics, or Philosophy of Law, or Philosophy of Science (broadly construed to include the natural, social, and cognitive sciences, whose work engages the intersection of science and value).
The Position: The Department of Philosophy at Cal Poly Pomona seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member with research and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas: medical ethics, philosophy of law, or philosophy of science (broadly construed to include the natural, social, and cognitive sciences, whose work engages the intersection of science and value). We are seeking candidates with an active research program as well as a sincere commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. The position carries a contractually-obligated teaching load of 3/3 in the first two years and 4/4 in the years following, with competitive course-reduction opportunities for research, service, and teaching initiatives.
In line with our university’s learn-by-doing pedagogy, we welcome candidates who demonstrate an interest in participating in our existing high-impact educational practices, e.g. our Clinical Ethics Practicum, Ethics Bowl, the Senior Project for our program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS), or the annual seminar taught in connection with the California Center for Ethics and Policy (for more information on the CCEP, see here); or to developing new high-impact courses related to their area of specialization. For Associate rank, we will give preference to candidates who can take on a leadership role with respect to administrative work such as recruitment, program assessment, and grant writing.
We have broad teaching needs in Normative Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, Comparative Philosophy, Philosophical/Religious Traditions in India, China, and Japan, Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, History of Analytic Philosophy, 19th-Century European Philosophy, and African Philosophy. We also welcome candidates who will complement or further contribute to our existing strengths in Feminist Philosophy and Philosophy of Race.
