The Terra Foundation for American Art is glad to offer the Research Travel Grants program. The foundation will only accept proposals from doctoral students, postdoctoral and senior scholars outside the United States.These grants provide support for research on topics concerning American art and visual culture prior to 1980. In this program, Grant funding is available for short-term travel.

Host Institution:

The Terra Foundation for American Art is a privately operated nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of American art exhibitions, projects, academic research, and publications worldwide. Its goal is to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the cultural and artistic heritage of the United States.


To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • The applicants must be a Doctoral student, Postdoctoral and Senior Scholar from outside of the US.
  • Be able to work under time pressure.
  • Demonstrate great potential in doing research.
  • Travel should be undertaken within one calendar year after the announcement of the selection
  • The final report must be submitted within three months of completion of travel. It should include a description of the travel undertaken as a result of the grant, an assessment of the research accomplished, and a financial report detailing grant expenditures.

Award Description:

The Terra Foundation for American Art  will provide an award up to 20 grants are awarded annually (up to five of them are specifically dedicated to scholars from Asia, Africa, and Latin America) as follows:

  • Up to $6,000 per grant for doctoral students from Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand;
  • Up to $7,000 per grant for doctoral students from Asia, Africa, and Latin America;
  • Up to $9,000 per grant for all postdoctoral and senior scholars.
  • Establish professional networks for future research.
