The Department of History at the University of York is now inviting applications for PhD scholarships. It was ranked 2nd for the quality, significance and impact of our research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, the most authoritative assessment of research quality in the UK. The department is one of the largest in the UK, with more than 40 academic members of staff working on medieval, early modern and modern history and covering a vast geographical scope ranging from Yorkshire, England, France and Poland to Kenya, Jamaica, China, India and Japan.

The Department operates as part of a cluster of internationally-renowned research centres and institutes, including the Centre for Medieval Studies, the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies and the Centre for Global Health Histories. The Times Higher ranks humanities at York in the top 25 of humanities clusters in the world, and doctoral students in History have excellent access to this inter-disciplinary research. They are members of the Humanities Research Centre, which offers a beautiful working environment, professional training, and plenty of opportunities to socialise and to collaborate on shared projects. Our graduate community is large, diverse and dynamic.

Different funding opportunities are available, including AHRC Doctoral Studentships (for  Home/EU students, deadline 15 January 2016) and Scholarships for Overseas Students (deadline 30 April 2016). For full details of the various schemes and how to apply, see
