Details:

The American Council of Learned Societies is now accepting applications for the ACLS Digital Extension Grant Program, which is made possible by the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The program aims to extend the opportunity to participate in the digital transformation of humanistic inquiry to a greater number of scholars by supporting digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences. To this end, projects supported by ACLS Digital Extension Grants may:

  • Develop new systems of making established digital research projects and resources available to broader scholarly audiences and/or scholars from institutions such as colleges and universities that serve underrepresented student populations, as well as institutions that historically have been underrepresented in digital humanities research.
  • Extend existing digital projects and resources with content that adds interdisciplinary reach or that diversifies the digital domain by incorporating materials or perspectives that have been underrepresented in the digital humanities.
  • Enhance established digital research projects by fostering new team-based collaborations among scholars at a range of career stages, with a special emphasis upon convening and training communities of faculty and graduate students, as well as expanding opportunities for scholars from institutions with limited digital infrastructure.
  • Create new forms and sites for scholarly engagement with the digital humanities.

ACLS will award up to five Digital Extension Grants in the 2018-19 competition. Each grant carries a maximum award of $150,000 for projects 12-18 months in duration and may be used to support a range of project costs. A portion of each proposed grant budget must be devoted to funding collaborations with and/or building networks among scholars of all career stages from US higher education institutions of diverse profiles.

Applications must be submitted through our online fellowship and grant administration system (ofa.acls.org) by January 16, 2019, 9 PM EST. More information about the program, including eligibility guidelines and the application process, is available here. Find a list of previous grantees here.

The American Council of Learned Societies, a private, nonprofit federation of 75 national scholarly organizations, is the preeminent representative of American scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. Advancing scholarship by awarding fellowships and strengthening relations among learned societies is central to ACLS’s work. This year, ACLS will award more than $25 million to over 350 scholars across a variety of humanistic disciplines.
