Call for papers

Proposals for presentations are now being invited for the 10th annual Hippocrates Poetry and Medicine Symposium, to be held jointly with the University of Newcastle on 17 May 2019 at the Centre for Life, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom. Held in conjunction with the international Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine, the symposium attracts scholars from across the globe with broad interests in poetry and the medical humanities. Check out the website for more information on past symposia and on the Hippocrates Prize. Proposals (up to 400 words, for 15-minute presentations or posters) should address any work at the intersection of poetry and medicine, whether from the perspective of poetics and literary scholarship (e.g. examining poetry dealing with any kind of medical subject matter) or from the perspective of the medical community (e.g. examining uses to which poetry may be put in palliative care or in the training of medical professionals).

To submit an abstract or to contact the organizers, please visit the website above and follow the links. The submission deadline is 31 January 2019 and decisions will be made by 28 February 2019.

Symposium activities will include poetry readings; scholarly presentations and panels on 17 May at the Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne (breakfast and lunch will be provided); and the Hippocrates Prize award ceremony and reading of winning entries on the afternoon of 17 May.
